Why eye tests are crucial as you get older...

The key to good vision is having regular eye examinations. They provide a valuable health check as well as enabling you to see better with the right glasses.

But especially important as you get older. That’s because age is the highest risk factor in the development of eye conditions that cause vision loss. For example, glaucoma mainly affects those over 40. Furthermore, one in every twelve people will have a serious problem by the time they are 60 - and this increases to one in six when they have reached 75.

Yet around six million older people are putting their eyesight at risk by not having regular eye tests. A survey of the over-60s by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) found that nearly half (47%) are failing to have annual eye examinations.

As well as providing better vision with an up-to-date prescription, an eye test can detect conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. If discovered early enough, many of these conditions can be effectively treated. But if ignored, they can lead to blindness.

It’s not just the risk of eye disease that particularly affects older people. Poor vision greatly increases the risk of falls. In fact, falls represent the most common and serious type of accident for this age group. One in three people aged over 65 has had a bad fall at least once a year.

This needless suffering could be avoided if more older people took advantage of the free eye tests available under the NHS.

The RNIB is clear:

“Our message to people over 60 is simple...
Don’t wait until you notice changes in your vision to visit an optician - get your eyes tested every year”
