At The Big Optician, we’re committed to providing our patients with the most advanced and comprehensive eye tests. That’s why our OCT (optical coherence tomography) scan and retinal imaging service are integral components of our enhanced eye test. Utilising this state-of-the-art technology, we ensure precise and thorough assessments of your eye health from start to finish.
What is an OCT scan?
Our enhanced eye tests include an OCT scan, along with digital retinal imaging and visual field screening. An OCT scan involves a non-invasive imaging technology that captures high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing our optometrists to assess the layers of the eye with remarkable precision. Here at The Big Optician, we utilise the Topcon Maestro OCT, a cutting-edge machine that ensures hospital-grade accuracy and detail.
Because the OCT scan provides detailed information about the structure of the eye, it can help with the early detection of eye conditions that may not be apparent during a standard eye test. This information is especially helpful when referring patients to ophthalmologists for further specialised care.
How does it work?
The OCT scan duration varies and it is followed by additional time for our optometrist to provide a detailed explanation of the findings to the patient. The process is painless, involving the projection of light waves into the eye, and the reflections are used to construct a detailed map of the retina. Every patient is offered and, where appropriate, recommended to undergo an OCT scan as part of their eye test.
Am I eligible for an OCT scan?
This advanced imaging technology is particularly beneficial for those with conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or diabetes, but it is also strongly recommended to everyone as it can provide valuable clinical information about the overall health of the eye for a wide range of patients.
Glaucoma Screening
Measuring the pressures within your eyes is an important part of the eye examination as it can detect glaucoma, a serious, sight-threatening condition, before you experience any symptoms. However many people dread the traditional method of measuring eye pressures – the eye puff test. With this in mind The Big Optician invested in technology where this all important part of your eye test done is done in a totally comfortable way – the ‘no puff pressure test’. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the UK. Getting your eye pressures checked has never been easier.
What is retinal imaging?
Digital Retinal imaging is incorporated into all comprehensive NHS and private eye tests. Using a Kowa fundus camera, this process captures detailed images of the retina, aiding our optometrists in monitoring and detecting potential issues.
This technology allows our optometrists to closely examine the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve, providing insights into conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and hypertension. The detailed images aid in the early identification of issues, allowing for proactive management and preservation of vision.
How does it work?
Retinal imaging is a quick and painless process, integrated seamlessly into our comprehensive eye tests. The images provide valuable information about the health of the retina and the blood vessels within, assisting our optometrists in early detection and management of various eye conditions.
Am I eligible for retinal imaging?
Retinal imaging is suitable for patients of all ages and is included as a standard in our comprehensive eye tests.
