The importance of taking care of your hearing

Care Of Your Hearing

Did you know that one in three adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus?

Although possible at any age, hearing problems become more common as you get older. This can have a big impact on your quality of life, including difficulty socialising and problems with balance.

According to research, unmanaged or undiagnosed hearing loss can double the chance of experiencing mental health problems and increase the likelihood of developing dementia by five times, which can leave you feeling isolated.

What are the signs of hearing loss?

Hearing loss

Hearing loss can develop gradually and can be hard to spot. However, there are several tell-tale signs to look out for, such as:

  • asking people to repeat themselves
  • having to turn the volume up on the TV
  • finding it hard to keep up with conversations
  • difficulty hearing people on the phone or in noisy places

The Big Optician hearing care assessment

Hearing Care Assesment

It couldn’t be easier to get your ear health checked than at The Big Optician in Newcastle. It’s free and carried out by a highly qualified audiologist from The Hearing Care Partnership. Using the most advanced technology and diagnostic tools, the audiologist will carry out a variety of tests, including tympanometry (how well your eardrum moves), pure tone audiometry (measuring your hearing sensitivity), and speech tests. Following this, you will be given a detailed review of your overall hearing health and advice on the next steps.

It is recommended that you get your hearing checked annually if you’re over 60 or every couple of years if you’re younger to ensure your hearing health is meeting the correct standards.

After your assessment

Hearing Aids

Your audiologist may recommend hearing aids to help you hear better. They’ll discuss your lifestyle and personal needs to identify what’s best for you. The Hearing Partnership only deals with industry-leading brands, and to ensure everyone is able to choose what’s best for them, payment plans are available. This plan allows you to spread the cost over 10 easy instalments.

Thanks to The Hearing Care Partnership, we can also provide:

  • earwax removal
  • tinnitus consultations
  • hearing protection
